May 11: April Tip Reporting Deadline

If you received more than $20 in tips during the month of April, IRS rules dictate that you must report this income to your employer by May 11. This can be done using IRS Form 4070 or a signed written statement containing your name, address, Social Security number, your employer's details, the reporting period, and the total tips collected.

How Tip Withholding Works

Once reported, your employer will withhold Medicare, Social Security (FICA), and income taxes from your regular wages to cover the taxes owed on your tips. If your standard paycheck cannot cover these taxes, the uncollected amount is reported in box 8 of your W-2, and you will need to pay the balance when you file your annual return.
